Everyday Epiphanies: Watch Me, Mom

It happened on one of those evenings when everything felt rushed — dinner, bath time, pajamas, the whole routine. I was tired, thinking about the next day, already mentally sorting through the things I didn’t get done. And then I heard it:
“Watch me, Mom!”
Just two little words. But they stopped me.
He wanted to show me something small — a jump, a spin, a silly move he’d done a hundred times. Nothing extraordinary. Nothing that would ever matter to anyone else. But to him, it mattered. To him, being seen was everything.
I knelt down, looked him in the eyes, and said, “I’m watching.” And the way his face lit up — it undid me a little.
After he went to bed, I sat in the quiet and replayed that moment. The way he needed my eyes, my attention, my presence. The way his whole heart rested in the simple assurance that I saw him.
And then it hit me — I’m not so different.
There are days when I whisper the same thing to God without even realizing it. Watch me, Father. See me trying. See me tired. See me doing my best with what I have. See me in the mess, in the middle, in the moments no one else notices.
And He does.
Not because I’m impressive. Not because I’m performing. But because I’m His.
That night, I realized that the longing my son has — to be seen, to be known, to be delighted in — is the same longing God placed in me. And the same longing He answers.
Every “Watch me, Mom” becomes a reminder that God is watching me too — not with judgment, but with love. Not with impatience, but with tenderness. Not from far away, but from right here in the middle of my everyday life.
These are the epiphanies that find me in the smallest moments. The ones that whisper the loudest truths.
And I’m learning to listen.
